In a nutshell, campaign disclosure statements tell the public (and the press) where committees get their money and what they spend it on.
These statements are due at specific times before an election and semi-annually. To most people, the disclosure statements read like bad stereo instructions. Not to mention that the campaign finance laws are changing on an almost daily basis.
